Our Writers

The Junior League of Tampa Cookbook Blog is written by many talented League members and friends. We invite you to meet our writers:

Cindy Valdez

Cynthia Valdez was born in Niagara Falls, NY, but has been a Tampa resident for more than twenty years. She is married and has three children that range in age from 2 to 17. She is a first year active member in the Junior League of Tampa and spends her precious free time writing, playing with her new camera, sewing, and, much to her chagrin, cleaning up after her basset hound, Daisy.

See what’s on her mind and in front of her lens at her website cynthiavaldez.com.

Kathy Zahn

Kathryn Zahn is married, has two beautiful boys ages 4 and 1, and has lived in the Tampa Bay area for over 30 years.  She is proud to be a part of The Junior League of Tampa and is excited about the upcoming cookbook.  She loves to cook and loves to write, but nothing happens that doesn’t include her family and friends. Check out her blog at lifefriendsandfood.wordpress.com. Bon Appétit!

Dave Kempf

Lisl Unterholzner

Originally from Tampa, Lisl spent 5 exhilarating but cold winters in New York, where she earned a Diploma in Wine from the Wine & Spirits Education Trust and sold wine to four-star restaurants like Jean-Georges and Union Square Café. Bringing a love of wine and great food, plus husband Daniel, back home, she served on the development committee for Capture the Coast before stepping up to Co-Chair the debut year. Mother to two girls, ages 3 & 5, her family has eaten well during the testing and production phases, and she is happy to share her insight about the new book.

Suzanne Oaks Brownstein

Being the daughter of a gourmet cook from Mobile, Alabama, Suzanne was “shut out” of the kitchen from an early age. This left her in the predicament of both (1) appreciating and expecting the highest level of culinary preparation anad (2) unable to meet these expectations with her own cooking. Until, that is, she began trying recipes from The Junior League of Tampa’s extensive cookbook collection. She is now able to prepare some of her favorite dishes — including Picadillo and the famous Columbia restaurant’s “1905 Salad” (from Capture the Coast) – finding that delicious can also be simple.

Suzanne is currently the PR “captain” for the JLT Cookbook Committee, a corporate writer and communications consultant, and lives with her husband and two children in South Tampa.

Jaime Brewer

Lee Manwaring Lowry

Lee currently serves as the Community Vice President of The Junior League of Tampa. Last year, she was Finance Vice President of the
League, and the liaison to the Holiday Gift Market and Cookbook committees. She thoroughly enjoyed helping JLT debut the final volume of the Culinary Collection, and making recipes and blogging for the League, as cooking is her hobby. In her professional life before retiring to stay home with her family, Lee was the Managing Director of American Stage Theatre in St. Petersburg. She has two children, Lillie, 11 and Laander, 7, and celebrated her 15th wedding anniversary with her husband Lionel this past summer.
